Set Appliance State:
Mains Power Off
Gas On; Pilot On
Selector switch in HW position.

Observation:
Turn Gas Control Valve Knob clockwise to extinguish Pilot. Listen for Thermo Electric Valve (TEV) to trip out (this can take up to 30 seconds).
