Set Appliance State:
Mains Power Off
Gas On; Pilot On
DHW Thermostat set to Maximum
Ensure DHW is cool (this can be achieved by running DHW with rotary switch in off position)

Observation:
With DHW cool check free play between thermostat phial and thermostat linkage.
Turn on hot tap and allow boiler to heat the water.
As water gets hot does free play between thermostat phial and thermostat linkage reduce proving that the thermostat phial has expanded?
