The Gravity heating system is usually found in older houses and is often heated by a back boiler unit or open flued boiler. It has no motorised valve so cannot give independent control of the heating and hot water.
The boiler is controlled by the Hot Water channel of the timer and the pump is controlled through the Heating channel. This means the heating can not be used independently of the hot water but, as the hot water does not require the pump to run, it can be used without the heating on in the summer.
The C-Plan heating system is an evolution of the Gravity system which gives greater control over the temperature of the hot water. It has one six wire motorised valve fitted in the flow pipe of the hot water circuit, this is controlled by a cylinder thermostat and when opened turns on the boiler. In Heating only mode the pump is controlled directly by the Room Thermostat and the boiler is controlled through the valves end switch.
This type of system allows for independent use of the hot water and heating giving slightly more control.
The C-Plan Plus heating system is a further evolution of the Gravity system which gives greater control over the temperature of the hot water. Similar to an S-Plan system it has two motorised valves a five wire valve fitted in Heating circuit flow pipe and a six wire valve fitted in the Hot Water flow pipe.
The pump and heating valve are controlled by the Room Thermostat and the Hot Water valve controlled by the cylinder thermostat. This type of system allows for independent control over each demand.
The M-Plan heating system, a predecessor of the S-Plan system, uses only one two port valve on the heating circuit. The system can provide Hot water without heating or both at the same time, but can not provide heating only.
The W-Plan heating system, a precursor to the Y-Plan system, is a hot water priority system meaning the heating will not circulate until the temperature of the hot water has reached its set point. Similar to the Y-Plan system it has one three port motorised valve which diverts the water flow to the heating or hot water circuits but, unlike the Y-Plan, can not provide both at the same time.
This system type is often fitted with a Priority Switch to alter which circuit heats up first for more information on this setup see the
W-Plan With Priority Switch option.
The W-Plan With Priority Switch is an evolution of the standard W-Plan system, though the use of a priority switch it allows the user to select either hot water or heating priority meaning the selected circuit will heat until the temperature set point is reached before heating the other circuit. Similar to the Y-Plan system it has one three port motorised valve which diverts the water flow to the heating or hot water circuits but, unlike the Y-Plan, can not provide both at the same time.
